Bing Places: The Listing That Decides Your ChatGPT Visibility

Bing Places: The Listing That Decides Your ChatGPT Visibility

Almost every business has a Google Business Profile. Very few have a Bing Places listing. That gap explains a large share of why businesses do not appear when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, because ChatGPT’s web browsing runs on Bing’s index, not Google’s.

It is the least glamorous item on any AI visibility list and usually the highest leverage, because your competitors have not done it either.

Why Bing matters far more than its market share suggests

Bing’s share of consumer search is small. Its share of AI-assistant retrieval is not. Microsoft powers Copilot with it, ChatGPT browses through it, and several smaller assistants use it as a retrieval layer. So a modest search engine sits underneath a very large share of AI answers.

The practical result: a business invisible in Bing is invisible to a category of queries that is growing quickly, no matter how well it ranks on Google.

Claiming and completing the listing

Getting set up

Go to Bing Places for Business and sign in with a Microsoft account. If your business already appears, claim the existing record rather than creating a duplicate. Duplicates are worse than nothing, because they split and contradict your signals.

There is also an import route from Google Business Profile. It saves time, but it copies whatever inconsistencies exist in your Google data, so check every field afterwards.

The fields that actually matter

  • Business name: exactly as it appears everywhere else. No added keywords, no legal suffix on one platform and not another.
  • Categories: primary category first, then relevant secondaries. This determines which queries you are eligible for.
  • Service area: for consultants and service businesses, set service areas rather than a physical address.
  • Phone: one number, one format, matching every other listing.
  • Website: with https and no trailing inconsistencies.
  • Description: plain language, naming your services and the places you serve. This is text a model can lift.
  • Photos: several, including a logo and real images.
  • Hours: accurate, because they are read as an operating signal.

Verification

Bing verifies by phone, email or post depending on the record. It is usually faster than Google. Until verification completes, the listing carries little weight, so do not stop halfway.

The step most people skip: Bing Webmaster Tools

Claiming Places gets your business record in. Submitting your site to Bing Webmaster Tools gets your content in, which is a separate and equally important thing.

Add your site, verify ownership, submit your sitemap, and check the index coverage report. Many sites that are fully indexed by Google turn out to have significant gaps in Bing simply because nobody ever told Bing they existed. There is also an IndexNow integration that pushes new and updated URLs immediately rather than waiting for a crawl.

For a site with a lot of pages, this single step often does more for AI visibility than months of content work.

After the listing: the rest of the verification layer

Bing Places is the foundation, not the whole building. The same identity should then appear, identically, on Apple Business Connect, the major review platforms, your industry directories and any association you belong to. Each consistent repetition raises the confidence a model has that you are a real, active business matching a given request.

How to check whether it worked

  1. Search your business name on Bing directly and see what is returned
  2. Check index coverage in Bing Webmaster Tools after two weeks
  3. Ask Copilot, which uses Bing most directly, for recommendations in your category
  4. Then test ChatGPT with the same prompts, monthly

Copilot usually reflects Bing changes before ChatGPT does, which makes it a useful early indicator.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Bing Places take to set up?

Under an hour to complete, plus verification time. Importing from Google is faster but requires a full field-by-field check afterwards.

Do I need a physical address?

No. Service-area businesses can hide the address and define the regions they serve, which is the right setup for consultants and remote service providers.

Will this alone get me into ChatGPT answers?

Rarely on its own. It removes the biggest blocker. Reviews, consistent data across platforms and independent mentions do the rest.

Is Bing Webmaster Tools worth it if my site ranks well on Google?

Yes, and often more so. Sites that perform well on Google frequently have poor Bing coverage purely because nothing ever pointed Bing at them.
